EAGLE WEB WEBSITE PROMOTION NEWSLETTER
August

This Months Topic: Quick review of steps to Effective Website Promotion

The response to Julys' newsletter was tremendous. Thank You! Some asked for to send it by e-mail and we will think about it. However, there are spam issues we wish to avoid and the mail is cluttered enough as it is. I love those pyramid scheme e-mails. If you want to study marketing and selling, read those. These guys are actually selling you nothing and making it sound great. Imagine what you could do with an actual product?

I am sorry that I cannot reply to all your suggestions and ideas personally. However, they did not go unheeded or appreciated. The top theme on the responses was that people wanted to know how they could perform effective website promotion. Some wanted low costs, others wanted effective. We can teach you effective website promotion. I don't know about low cost. Cost in website promotion is directly related to money, time, resources, space and ability. Man, my business professor would be proud.

1. Ability of the promoter

2. The design of the site

3. Time

First ability of the promoter. Do you know html? How well? Intermediate is good. Advanced is better. Can you study headers, html tags, and graphics and be able to figure out the subtle differences that make one page better than another?

The site design: Does it use frames? How much text on the pages? What are the page header themes for each page? What is the keyword relevancy of each page?

Time! Time is often a commodity that people forget about; yet, is the most important resource you have. Time is directly related to money. How valuable is your time? Would you lose or make money by becoming involved in website promotion? Are you interested or will this become a chore? People normally set aside chores. People like to do what interests them. If the answer to many of these questions is not very good, you have the option of doing a little and letting a professional help you. Or you can outsource your website promotion. Many times, outsourcing your promotion to professionals can actually save you money, increase your profits, and allow you to save time to spend on more important areas of your business. Your choice!

Ok, with the background set up, let's start teaching you website promotion!

The first step in effective website promotion is looking at the site and making sure it is formatted properly. The first thing is: Does the site use frames? If it does, you just got hosed. I could write a whole article on frames and we will later. Basically, open your browser and view the source code for your index page. See where after the first frameset tag all your text is missing? That is what a search engine spider sees. NO TEXT! Search engines spiders index text. If there is no text, there is no relevancy and no keyword weight. This page goes to the bottom 1/3 of the search engine index on most engines. (Altavista, Lycos, and Hotbot sometimes index these pages well if there is not other relevant pages for a particular keyword phrase) Next, look up between the 2 <head> tags. This is called a header. Do you have a title, description, and keyword meta tag. Is it relevant and specific to the page. There are other things you need to know here and once again, I don't have time. Except to say, that you should have defined what your top 5-20 keyword phrases were before you even designed the site. If you did not, you better get started.

Okay, you've reviewed the site and know everything is perfect. You are not using frames. Every page has a header. Every page has 3-10 paragraphs of text with the central keyword repeated with an average relevancy of 3-10%.

What? You don't want a bunch of text on your site? Your idea of marketing is shopping for groceries. You decided English and Grammar were electives and went out to play ball. We understand. :-) But, we must ask. How do you plan to promote your site on 3/4 of the top 9 search engines without text? How are you planning on convincing other people to buy your product if you can't tell them:
1. What you sell? You'd be surprised how many people think a picture and a logo gets it done.
2. Why should I buy it from you? What makes you better than the competition? Price?
3. What are the benefits to me as a customer? People are on average selfish. I am. You try to sell me something and the first thing out of my mouth is: What's in it for me? And you have 1 page to this on. The one your customer sees.
At this point, you might want to seek professional help. You will more than likely require a promotional domain. Please visit http://www.eaglewwweb.com and we can help you get started on effective website promotion.

Are you annoyed by commercials; yet, mysteriously drawn to them. Studying commercials can help you. Analyze them. Break them down. What was the message? How did they get it to you. Who is the target audience? Hate them and love them at the same time? Come on! You gotta love the bud lizards. A web page or newsletter that brings out emotion sells. Marketing is what sells your product. If you don't know it, pay closer attention to commercials- some are actual works of art. Others really suck, especially women hygiene commercials during dinner. What is up with that? Nothing personal ladies-you gotta hate them too? :-)

Okay, we are getting off-topic. (We do that sometimes)

Next you need to submit the site to the search engines and directories. This again becomes an art form. Submit index pages (homepage) first. Good idea to let a couple of days pass before sending other site pages. And, be aware that just because the search engine said the page was indexed does not mean it was. 90% of the time it does. Search engines have problems too. Also, with search engines submission think quality before quantity.
1. There are not 1550 search engines you want to be listed in.
2. There are 9 top search engines. Visit our submission page. Maybe 10-20 secondary engines. And another 25-50 links and international engines and directories you want to be listed in. The rest will be shared links within your profession that you will have to find and set up. Don't expect a submission service to do this for you. Even if they say, they do. All they will do, is load you up into the automatic submitter and hit send. Think about it. There is only so far $20-$50 will take you.
3. Why submit to FFA links? While submitting to Free for All Links sites does put you on e-mail lists, using an automatic submission service makes submitted to the additional important sites easier and faster and does give you additional popularity if done at the right time. Most are junk but you take the good with the bad.

Now, here is my pitch on submissions. Who is going to give you a better submission? A person who charges $20.00 and does it from home with an automatic submitter and a form. Or, a search engine placement company that is going to have to get there placement customers listed well in order to get paid. Also, we don't create a form because all sites are different and each site needs to be analyzed to see if it is ready for submission. If your site is not ready for submission, we will tell you. Plus, we will tell you what needs to be done by you or us to make it an effective submission. We deal in quality submissions, not quantity.

You want to try to get as many exposures as possible without spamming the search engines. Technically and given enough time a good website promotion professional can create a page for every single top 30 position on a search engine for a given keyword phrase. However, this is considered spamming and you will get kicked out, so don't do it. Try to get 1-3 pages in the top 30 and you will be fine. Also, consider resubmissions, you should resubmit the pages that don't listed or get dropped every 30 days. How do you check? Manually or get a good auditing program. We have one. Cost is $50.00 per reports on the top 10 keyword phrases. Do not submit all your pages every 30 days. This is once again spamming and some search engines have filters to guard against this.

This where web hosting comes into play also. Search engine spiders will return to your site on a regular basis. If your site is not up when they are looking there is a possibility that the site or pages may be dropped or ignored. If your site is down regularly, as is the case with most single server hosting, you could be losing out. So, if you are paying $9.95 or less than $30 for hosting. It could be costing you in site uptime.

Here is a link to InterNIC whois database.

http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois/

enter your domain i.e. "eaglewwweb.com", hit return. It will show you all your domain name information. Neat huh? Look at the very bottom where it lists domain servers. How many do you have? 2 or more is good. 1 is bad.

We lease our servers from the largest national ISP. Not because we like to spend extra money but because we know: "You get what you pay for!" You need redundant servers with back-up capabilities, and 99.9% uptime. The weather should not dictate whether your site is up or not. Just because you decided to live on a mountain-top in Nepal does not mean your webpage has to also. You need professional technical support 24 hours a day. Having us host your site gives you personal service with quality products. Ooops, I'm selling again.

Okay, so we've checked everything and submitted. Now what? We wait.........
Search engines will take anywhere from 2 days to 12 weeks to get you listed. Resubmission will be needed for some pages. Directories will take 3-10 weeks and resubmission may be necessary. However, some directories are more particular than others and some will not list if your site does not have a professional look. If you submit to the top 6 directories and don't get listed there is probably something wrong with your site or the technique used to get listed.

This was a quick breakdown of how to get your site going in the right direction. In future newsletters, we will get more intense on a particular topic and eventually, we will get to the point to where we will actually start analyzing scripts and templates that actually work.
