EAGLE WEB WEBSITE PROMOTION NEWSLETTER This Months Topic: Search Engine Tracking Updates! ****************************************************** Due to the recent changes on the search engines for 2001, We are doing some adjustments on the reports to improve performance and more accurately reflect the changes as they exist. This is a normal process and is part of our research, updating, and quality control programs offered by our service to better promote your business. Improvements: Reporter searches now download the search engine home page and then it extracts the current search string before each run. This helps us maintain 24 hr./day accuracy and improves emulation of a browser conducting a regular search. Over-all, this should significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of all future reporting missions, particularly when the engines change the syntax of their search strings. AOL has been split into two search engines: AOL Web Sites and AOL Web Pages. This is similar to the way Yahoo is split into two engines. The advantage is that you can determine your separate rankings for the directory portion of AOL and the Inktomi portion. The directory portion is where your LookSmart business express submission comes in and we can track that process now. NBCi has been split into three engines: NBCi Top Sites, NBCi Member Submitted, and NBCi Additional Pages. Top sites is the business express portion and where more than 60% of this traffic comes from. That is why we push business express submissions and now we can track them. Each of these sections derive their results from different databases. Therefore, this new format gives us enhanced flexibility in tracking your rankings. Infoseek/Go has been removed. Disney discontinued Infoseek and now uses only the Goto.com engine for searches. Go.com still exists but the results you see for your goto.com reporting listing will be the same as what is listed on go.com. While similar, they are different search engines run by different companies. About.com/Sprinks support will be added later. Other updates have been made to various engines to enhance reliability even when the engines change their formats. Some of these changes are "behind the scenes" improvements.
